The fire and security National Occupational Standards (NOS) have not been updated in the UK-wide context since 2018 (Scotland), although revised NOS have since been introduced in Northern Ireland (2019), Wales (2023) and (OS) in England in 2024.
Work on a new review project is now under way through a UK-wide partnership of relevant employer and stakeholder bodies to create a single NOS version. This includes the Fire and Emergency Security Systems (FESS) UK Employer Forum, Skills for Security, BSIA and the SELECT Fire and Security Group (Scotland).
We are required to consult with employers, employees, and stakeholders across all four nations. This is to ensure that the NOS remain technically fit-for-purpose and common throughout the UK, reflecting the evolving nature of those working in installation, commissioning and maintenance roles within the FESS sector.
We have had some initial meetings with employers and training providers from all four UK nations and can now share the draft NOS descriptions, seeking your input to produce a revised draft NOS description for the whole UK FESS sector. The revised final draft will be published for comment in the new year for implementation in the first quarter of 2026.
